2007 – Sustainable Cities Initiative

2007: Bangladesh –
Sustainable Cities Initiative

In 2007, The Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Foundation committed to the transfer of knowledge between Bangladesh and the developed world about how cities can adapt to cope with the impact of climate change.

The commitment’s aim was to establish a Bangladesh ‘city hub’ in Dhaka as a partner to the University of Manchester’s Sustainable Cities Initiative. The project is led by an expert in environmental urban design and planning who is building a research base alongside university, public policy, and NGO partners in Bangladesh.

The program involved an initial phase to prioritize adaptation strategies for Dhaka, leading to a second phase, in collaboration with partner organizations, to leverage this initial investment to develop a larger research proposal for participation by public and private funders for work in both urban and rural Bangladesh, and potentially in major cities in other developing countries.
